FAQ (courtesy of www.drsketchy.com)

How is Dr. Sketchy’s different from a normal life drawing class?

In normal life classes, silent students sit in a silent room and draw a bored, oft-uninteresting model. In Dr. Sketchy’s we’ve got bodacious burlesque queens as models. We’ve got ridiculous art contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal? Best imagined costume?), good music and flashy prizes. We’ve got a selection of posh beverages- alcoholic and not- available to buy.

At Dr. Sketchy’s, we don’t care if you picked up a pad yesterday or 50 years ago. Come to drink or to draw. We’re happy to have you.

What mediums can I use?

All dry mediums are okay, as are dip pens and a neat watercolour sets. Oil paints, messy mediums and stinky mediums are not okay. Please don’t cause a mess. Sharpen your pencils over the garbage can.

Are there easles? Tables? Sketchpads?

The Warehouse has a few tables. All seating is first come, first served.

Full recap coming soon. In the meantime here are some photos of the artists. As you can see, a good time was had by all. A full gallery of photos will be on the Art in Heat website in the next week or so.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to the show Saturday and also to the artists, Lobsterboy and his Revue, our DJ Adam, Molly, and Paul. Special thanks to Jared of course, Kate for all her hard work, and Mike for both the website and putting up with me these last several months.

“Royally Ducked” for Art in Heat

Here is my painting for Art in Heat: “Royally Ducked.” At 36″ x 48″, it’s the largest painting I’ve done in a while, which was nice after painting lots of smaller pieces for out-of-town shows.

I’ll take some detail shots and post those later in the week. Art in Heat opens this Saturday.

Art in Heat – June 30

An eclectic mix of 18 emerging and established artists from the DC area combine forces for “Art in Heat!” Join the artists for the opening reception on Saturday, June 30, from 7 – 11pm at the Warehouse Gallery. There will be drink specials at the bar, and DJ Adam will keep the party going late into the night. Art in Heat will be on display through July 30, and there is no charge for admission.

The selected artists represent the best of DC’s Outsider, Lowbrow, and Pop Surrealist artists. They’re notable for creating work that’s fun, twisted, sexy, and just plain wrong. Featuring: Ed Bisese, Chris Bishop, Scott G. Brooks, Lisa Brotman, Anna U. Davis, Jared Davis, Alan Defibaugh, Margaret Dowell, Dana Ellyn, Gregory Ferrand, Linas Garsys, Laurel Hausler, Candace Keegan, John Lancaster, Emily Greene Liddle, Albert Schweitzer, Matt Sesow, and Ben Tolman.

In addition to the art, The Lobsterboy Revue will take over Warehouse Second Stage on opening night at 8pm and 11pm with his new show, “Tiki Party from Hell.”

Join us again at Warehouse Second Stage on Saturday, July 7th, for “A Very Special Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.” Bring your sketchpad and twisted little mind for an evening of art and burlesque.

Art in Heat will unofficially kick-off this year’s second annual Capital Fringe, which opens July 19th along the 7th Street corridor. The Warehouse is a popular venue and meeting place for Fringe, and Art in Heat is the perfect appetizer.

A complete gallery of the work will be online by June 29th.
