The Scrolls,” is an international discourse and “rolling” conversation amongst artists regarding the war in Iraq. 77 artists from 4 continents contributed work to the project, including works by 8 Iraqi artists currently living in Bagdad. The exhibition also contains a scroll created by artists from Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. The exhibition asks the question “Why?” the War…Mary Walker of South Carolina sent a piece called “Why” to a number of her colleagues and asked them to add to it in the manner of a scroll. Seven scrolls were created; They opened at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park, sponsored by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in 2005.

Cleveland-based artists Barbara Chira and Julie Friedman, organized the presentation of the Scrolls at Gallery West, Cuyahoga Community College/Western Campus, Parma, Ohio in early 2006.

This is the debut of the scrolls in the Washington area.

The public reception is Saturday, May 13 from 6-9 pm and coincides with the return of the American Friends Service Committee’s “Eyes Wide Open” Memorial of Boots that commemorates the US Fallen. It returns to DC for the third time. “Eyes Wide Open” will be on the National Mall on 14th Street from May 11-14. This year, a new Memorial to the Iraqi children, women and men killed in the war will be unveiled as well.

Mary Walker, founder, curator and visionary of the Scrolls, will be in attendance at the May 13th reception, at Modern ARF in addition to a number of the artists who contributed to the Scrolls.

The Museum of Modern Arf is across the street from the Clarendon Metro Elevator (Orange Line).

Rita in “Engendered Species” Exhibit, Gatov Gallery, Long Beach CA

The curators have put together an excellent website with a catalogue of the artists. Nice to see Rita’s pretty face splashed throughout the site.

“Engendered Species: An international exhibition that questions the traditionally fixed binary classification of gender, exploring how we “do” or “undo” both the gendered body and gender as a performance, as well as examining gender as endangered. ”

Art of War – Opening this Saturday, March 18, 7-10pm

Studio One Eight presents The Art of War. The exhibit marks the 3-year anniversary of the Iraqi conflict that began on March 20th 2003. The show brings together works inspired by the conflict and current events in the Middle East. The exhibit will includes artwork by artists Anna U. Davis, Dana Ellyn, J Coleman, Jordin Isip, Kelly Towles, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Matt Sesow, Peter Excho, Jared Davis, Scott G. Brooks, and many others.”

My submission is Il Teatro dei Roditori

At the convergence of war, politics, and commerce, an operatic tragedy is playing out. The competing interests in the military industrial complex have created a shadowy wake of abuse, lies, and cover-ups.

The military brass plays out their role with hypermasculine gusto, protecting their own image by manipulating and scapegoating those deemed weaker, whether prisoners or the rank-and-file.

Eighty-five percent of the troops say a major reason for the U.S. mission is “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9/11 attacks.” Intentional or not, the whole story in this theater of the absurd is not heard.

3 Drawings in La Luz De Jesus Gallery group show

I’m boxing up and sending out these three drawings for the show.

la_luz

From the gallery:La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents its 9th annual juried group exhibition, “Everything But the Kitschen Sync”. This gigantic, no-theme exhibition will feature work from what we feel are some of the most relevant artists working today.

We have invited commercial illustrators, tattooists, scenic painters, students, and animators to submit work of a more personal nature. The show includes artists we have previously exhibited, who consistently produce some of the most interesting paintings and sculptures in town, as well as a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered, underground talent. This is a wonderful forum for us and for our audience to check out the latest art trends and currents and get the first glimpse of tomorrow’s stars. It is also an incredible opportunity for art collectors to peruse more than 150 pieces of juried artwork by 100 artists all in one viewing, and obtain undiscovered art at undiscovered prices.

The Clayton Brothers, Mark Ryden, Michael Hussar and Tim Biskup are a few of our trusted favorites who have participated in the past. Please join us this March in supporting the latest and most original efforts from the nation’s alternative art scene.”
