Mariah ties Elvis with 17th No. 1 single

I’ve never been a big Elvis fan either.

Mariah Carey moved a step closer to the Beatles’ record of 20 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 Thursday as “Don’t Forget About Us” ascended one rung to the top of the singles chart in its 11th week.

With 17 chart-toppers, she now ties Elvis Presley at No. 2 on the all-time list, and becomes the only artist to post two No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 in 2005.

“Don’t Forget About Us” is also Carey’s 16th No. 1 as a songwriter, tying with Barry Gibb for third place. Only Paul McCartney with 32 and John Lennon with 26 have more. read more

The facts of life are sometimes crippling. Although I could no doubt remember at least two chorus lines from the 17 #1″s by Carey, I’m sure I could rememer at least four from Presley. Remarkabley though I can rememeber every #1 Beatles song with ease. Also remarkable is the fact that Lennon/McCartney wrote all of their #1 hits. I wonder how many Elvis is responcible for penning, or Mariah for that matter. I don’t think I want to know. Scribble over wonder.

  2. There are just so many talented musicians out there that have been around forever. I was shocked to see her so far up in the ranking. It’s as much about about marketing and promotion as it is about talent, if not more. And she did write most of her own #1 songs.

The same article goes on, “Don’t Forget About Us” is also Carey’s 16th No. 1 as a songwriter, tying with Barry Gibb for third place. Only Paul McCartney with 32 and John Lennon with 26 have more.”

Hides in embarassment. Shudders in disbelief. I quit the pop music scene a decade ago.
